What is the name and nature of your business?
It’s called 123 Technology.  We solve the IT issues of small businesses; our goal is to save time, reduce stress, and increase the productivity of our clients.

Who inspired you when you were growing up and how has that helped you in your business?
My parents have managed their own business since I was a child, so I saw first-hand the sacrifices and dedication required to start and operate a small business.

My cousin was also a huge influence, as he introduced me to IT from an early age and taught me that you can work in the IT industry without being a geek!  He also reinforced the notion of listening to clients, and working with them rather than telling them what to do.

What factors made you decide to start a business?
I had decided from an early age I wanted to be in control of my career, and believed I could achieve this by working for large organisations.  After working for three of these firms I found that no matter how much effort you put in, there will always be more you can achieve doing your own thing.

I took a six month sabbatical and travelled around the world, thinking about where I was in my career, and the direction I wanted to head for.  I knew that I had skills that were in demand, and so thought I would give it a shot.  After all, if it didn’t work out after two years, I knew I would still be “employable”.

How were you helped in developing your ideas, business plan and eventual start-up?
I’m very fortunate to have a close network of friends, who were invaluable when I began thinking about starting a business.  A few run their own businesses, and I benefited from learning about their pitfalls before I made my own!

I’ve also been supported by the Wandsworth Youth Enterprise scheme/business Launchpad, and Toyin Dania at WYEC has been a fountain of knowledge.  She’s coached me to think about business issues from different angles, and has helped me work around any obstacles I’ve faced.

What continues to motivate you?
I love running my own business, and being in control of the direction my career is heading.  The thought of having to work for a faceless organisation and getting involved in company politics motivates me to give my all to 123 Technology each day!  Don’t get me wrong – it’s not easy.  But being able to choose how I work, when I work, and with whom I work is a huge bonus!

What are your tips for anyone wanting to start their own business?
Think about whether the product or service you’re offering is already available.  If so, what is it that you’re going to do differently?  What’s unique about you - why would customers use you rather than your competitors?

Don’t be scared of asking questions.  Speak to your friends, colleagues, and even your competitors.  Support organisations like WYEC and Business Link are also valuable sources of advice.

My last tip is to never lose focus – there are too many “naysayer’s” in the world, who’ll always tell you why something can’t be done the way you want to do it.  Persevere, because it can be done your way.
