| Tonia
started her garden design business, Urban Babylon, in 2004 after
completing a Diploma
in Garden Design at the Pickard School in Lambeth. Originally
a research scientist, she started her own business after becoming
disillusioned by her chosen career, and decided to use her passion
for plants and gardens to change direction in life. She now uses
her experience in information and project management, along with
her natural creative streak, to design and oversee the building
of sophisticated and functional gardens both locally and nationally.
She also offers a consultancy service to help clients overcome
horticultural problems and to advise on ecological good practice
in the garden.
Urban Babylon had been test trading for a few months before
Tonia heard about Launchpad. She had completed a number of
projects obtained through personal referrals (including a successful
grant proposal for an Urban Regeneration scheme in Islington)
and was starting to think about advertising and market research.
With no real previous business experience she felt the business
lacked direction and planning, and needed advice.
‘I knew I needed guidance on running a business, and
after asking around, was advised to contact Launchpad by a
friend. I was delighted by how much information and help was
available; Launchpad has already saved me from making costly
mistakes and has focussed my attention on my target market.
I almost missed out on a wealth of information and am so pleased
that I made contact before my 31st birthday. If you are thinking
of starting your own business, and haven’t reached 31,
visit Launchpad. You can gain a lot of valuable and professional
help, and unlike other sources of quality business advice,
it doesn’t cost a penny!’
